songs you should own #1 – Embracing Accusations by Shane & Shane

Have you ever been listening to live music at a concert, and felt overwhelmed by what was happening? Like you were in this strange time and place, almost somewhere between heaven and earth? And you felt overwhelmed by how God surrounded you?

Well I have, a handful of times.

One of those times was on September 14, 2006 in Mitchell Hall at the University of Delaware. Even though it was a year and a half ago – I still remember being overcome with the thickness of God around me. Shane and Shane were in town. They sang a new song (unrecorded at the time) called Embracing Accusations.

The whole theme of the song is that the devil hangs part of the gospel story over us, but leaves out the main piece that Christ saves. The song is based on Galatians 3:10 where Paul quotes Deuteronomy 27:26:

“Cursed is the man who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out.”

But Paul goes on to say in verse 13 that…

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us”

Here are the lyrics to Embracing Accusations…

The father of lies
Coming to steal
Kill and destroy
All my hopes of being good enough
I hear him saying cursed are the ones
Who can’t abide
He’s right
Alleluia he’s right!

The devil is preaching
The song of the redeemed
That I am cursed and gone astray
I cannot gain salvation
Embracing accusation

Could the father of lies
Be telling the truth
Of God to me tonight?
If the penalty of sin is death
Then death is mine
I hear him saying cursed are the ones
Who can’t abide
He’s right
Alleluia he’s right!

Oh the devil’s singing over me
An age old song
That I am cursed and gone astray
Singing the first verse so conveniently
He’s forgotten the refrain
Jesus saves!

The song is appropriately dark, and should only be listened to VERY LOUD through a kicking sound system or through headphones that are NOT MADE BY COBY OR KOSS…

Plus, at 6 minutes and 51 seconds, this is a serious bargain for 99 cents…you can’t go wrong.

One of the things I love about this song is the way it builds and tells a story.  I remember when Shane got to the “Jesus Saves!” at the end of the song, I was overcome by the saving power of Christ.   We should never grow tired of preaching the gospel to each other.  Even believers need to hear it over and over again.
