This past Sunday night, we had the Urban Promise International Malawi Africa choir sing at Hockessin Baptist church.

They sang a really cool song called King of Africa:

here’s a monday morning quote for you…this is Louie Giglio talking about the sixsteps record label (tomlin, crowder, hall, redman) – he’s talking about the success of the record label but he puts things into perspective pretty well here…

Justin Cofield Band – Jon Foreman cover of White As Snow

The Justin Cofield Band just released a 4 song EP called King of Glory.

Our friend Kyle Lent is the guitarist in the band, he’s amazing. Kyle recorded and mixed the EP in his studio. The song really builds, about 5 minutes into the song there is a beautiful electric guitar part where Kyle used a bow on his electric in the vein of Sigur Ros. If you like Jon Foreman, you’ve got to check out this version of his original.

The whole EP is great, you can download it for $4 on their website or wait until December and it’ll be on Itunes.

Groupness – homeless redefining community

I met Herman today during lunch. We had a good time reconnecting. Today was a good day for him…his mind was very clear. We started talking about the money I have stored away for him – and how I feel bad that we haven’t found a good way to spend it on him. He told me to keep the money for now, and that it was better for me to hold on to it until he gets his apartment. I can tell he trusts me.

The good news is that Herman is next on the list to get an apartment through the agency he’s working with. Please pray that something opens up soon. He’s been on the waiting list for over 2 years and he’s getting close.

Herman started talking about a little group of homeless friends that spend nights together in the Wilmington Train station (pictured above) – from about 7:30 PM to around 6 AM…Hollywood, Hum’bird, Angel, Herman and another “old mama”.

He was talking about how they have “groupness“.

I said, “oh you mean you have community?”

He said, “No, groupness…you know – we look out for each other.”

I said, “Oh yeah, groupness“

There you go, a new vocab word…

group·ness (grōō’p nēss)
n. Slang

a social group of 5 people or less whose members are unrelated but reside in a specific locality, share food and blankets, and often have a common heritage, and who look out for each other…

Ben and I were hanging with Herman over the summer and at the time he (Herman) had been beaten up by a guy on the street…his eye was all swollen. I guess it really is dangerous to live on the street?

I was just re-reading my journal today and found a quote from Herman about the incident. This is how Herman described his feelings that day…

The person in me wants to repay him…but the God in me wants to forgive him.

Herman may lack solid theology, but he has a way with words. You gotta give him that.

Herman update

I’m sorry for not updating you on Herman…

I still meet with Herman almost every Wednesday.

Herman is still on the street. We still have the money sitting/waiting for him…I still give him clothes and food (And Bibles – which he in turn hands out – but he’s not open to getting counseling right now. After his time in prison, he had a good stretch where he showed some improvement towards his outlook.

Now he’s back in a rut…causing trouble on the street…but we’re still his friend, still trying to love on him.

I will bring some new love to the blog SOON!

Haiti Relief

My good friend Cody recently got back from Haiti.

Through his work with the North American Mission Board, Cody is helping funnel relief funds to Haiti with the recent crisis. Here is a brief update from his blog:

I just got off the phone with one of our contacts where we were working in Haiti and was told that the death toll is now over 500 and still climbing due to the hurricanes that have devastated Haiti. People are literally starving to death and dying of thirst because of all of the flooding.

The village where we just returned from, Camp Coq (a tiny village 2 hours from the city of Cape Haitien) has been devastated. Homes where we were just visiting last week are completely gone. The church and orphanage are ok, and any other home made of concrete. But the homes that are not made of concrete have been destroyed.

Jamare’s home has been destroyed. Where will she go?

I agree with Cody’s encourgement to get involved with prayer and giving.

My cool sis Natalie pointed out that the song “Give Me Your Eyes” by Brandon Heath reminded her of what we’re doing on the streets of Wilmington. Brandon Heath also reminds me a little of Matt Kearny.

how to help homeless people according to eli (6) and eden (4)

A while ago, I was sitting with my six year old son and my four year old daughter. We were talking about Herman and they were asking why people were homeless. I asked them for their ideas on how to help homeless people. Below are their ideas. I thought it was funny that Eli started by saying that we needed some building plans. And Eden was concerned that they needed trash cans and markers…kids are pretty insightful.
